Geolines Volume 19

The 2nd joint meeting of the Central European Tectonic Studies Group and the 9th meeting of the Czech Tectonic Studies Group was hold in Lucenec, Slovak Republic, in April 2004. In this meeting, representatives of the four main participating countries decided that the next meeting would be held in Hungary. This decision is in line of former intention that the CETeG Meeting will turn to a fully international geoscientific conference, including the Visegrád countries, as well as all other geoscientists interested in tectonic problems of the central European area. Reflecting to the announcement of the organizers, approximatively 100 participants registered at the 3rd CETeG Meeting.

As a positive sign, not only the 4 nations from the Visegrád countries will be represented, but scientists from Romania, Slovenia, and Switzerland will also increase the scientific level of the conference. Facilitating organising tasks and responding scientific needs, Hungarians formed the Hungarian Tectonic Group (HUNTEK), which will hold its first meeting attached to the CETeG conference. The catalysing role of CETeG is very important in the birth of the HUNTEK group, and hopefully, in its future life.

The topics of the conference will concentrate on the main aspects of tectonic research:

  • Structural evolution of the Alpine-Carpathian-Dinaridic orogenic belt: from mountain root to top – analogies from other orogenic belts
  • Structural control on sedimentation and basin evolution
  • Relationship of magmatism and tectonics – chicken or egg?
  • Deformation and evolution of the (lower) crust and upper mantle (tracked by geophysical, geochemical, and petrological methods)
