The meetings of the Czech Tectonic Studies Group (CTS) have traditionally been attended by a number of geoscience professionals and students from neighbouting countries – Poland and Slovakia. This important international aspect became expressed in the fact that the 8th Meeting of the CTS in 2003 in the Hrubá Skála chateau is organized also as the 1st Meeting of the Central European Tectonics Group (CETG). The main organizer of the meeting is the Geophysical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, co-organizing institutions are as follows: The Ministry of Environment of the Czech Republic, SÚRAO (Radioactive Waste Repository Authority of the Czech Republic), and the Faculty of Science of the Charles University, Prague. The conference venue, Hotel-chateau Hrubá Skála, is located in the scenic region of Český Ráj (Czech Paradise), on the tops of sandstone pillars of one of the famous “rock cities” of the Bohemian Cretaceous Basin. Conference field trips, focused on the tectono – sedimentary history of the Bohemian Cretaceous Basin and the structural aspects of Cenozoic volcanics of the Eger Graben, as well as several special sessions held during the meeting, emphasize topics which have not traditionally been strongly represented in tectonic studies in our region, and underline the breadth and multi-disciplinary nature of geoscience research represented currently at CTS/CETG meetings. A very important aspect of the meeting is the attendance by students, who in 2003 form over 30 per cent of the audience. The organizers would like to thank all participants for contributing to the rich mix of scientific presentations and a friendly social atmosphere, and believe that this meeeting is another step in strengthening cooperation across borders in Central European geoscience.
